Technologists are attempting to simulate psychedelic states through VR and other immersive media experiences. Researchers in a project called Wavepaths have created software applications that combine generative music and light-art with neuroscience and intelligent technologies to create cathartic experiences that lead to improved emotional wellbeing.
Where we’re going
Although they can’t yet fully replicate the sense of ego-dissolution of a psychedelic trip, simulators are looking to combine VR technologies with brain-machine interfaces to gain real-time neuronal and physiological feedback in the future.
How to think about it
Consider a combination of traditional spiritual techniques (breathwork, meditation, etc.) and VR for more of a ‘trip’. Or take a page from James Turrell exhibits and make VR expansive, rather than psychedelic.
